Private Schools Association Appeals to Anambra State Government for Tax Relief

OPSAN Urges Anambra State Government to Review Burdensome Taxes on Private Schools

Private Schools Association Appeals to Anambra State Government for Tax Relief

The Owners of Private Schools Association of Nigeria (OPSAN) has raised concerns over the multiple taxes and levies imposed by Anambra State Government agencies on private school proprietors. The appeal was made by OPSAN National President, Prof Uzochukwu Nwanonyuo, during the inauguration of the association’s new Anambra state executive led by Chief Ernest Iwuamadi on Monday.

Nwanonyuo emphasized that private schools should be recognized as institutions providing social services for the benefit of God and humanity, rather than mere business ventures. He called on Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, to intervene urgently and alleviate the burden of multiple taxation, illegal levies, and other unwarranted payments faced by private schools.

"Our major challenge in Anambra is the exorbitant taxes and levies. We call on the state government to address the matter urgently," said Nwanonyuo. He also expressed concern about the encroachment and harassment by a group known as the 'Anambra State Joint Enforcement Unit,' noting that their activities are adversely affecting the quality of education in the state.

The newly inaugurated state president of OPSAN, Chief Ernest Iwuamadi, lamented the perceived marginalization of private schools. He pointed out that while public schools and mission schools have been exempted from multiple levies and taxes, private schools continue to face financial challenges.

OPSAN hopes that the state government, under Governor Soludo's leadership, will review and address these concerns promptly, ensuring a conducive environment for private schools to thrive and continue providing quality education in Anambra State.
