In a devastating incident at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), a 500-level Geology student, Joseph Agabaidu, lost his life while trying to protect his girlfriend from assailants. The Bauchi State Police Command disclosed that the assailants had snatched the girlfriend's handbag, leading Agabaidu to intervene.

According to the police statement, the incident occurred on December 2, 2023, around the Yelwan Tudu market in the Yelwa area, a suburb of Bauchi. Agabaidu sustained a stab wound to the left side of his chest during the attempt to retrieve the handbag, and despite being rushed to ATBU Teaching Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

The tragic event prompted a protest by students, expressing their frustration with the perceived lack of security on the campus. In response to the protest, the management of ATBU decided to temporarily close the school, instructing students to vacate the campus immediately.
