In an impressive feat, St. John Vianney Science College, Igbariam, Anambra State, claimed the National Girls in ICT Competition 2024 title on Wednesday with their innovative virtual reality project, M-Tag VR. The competition, organized by the Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, saw the best of Nigeria's secondary school talent compete to showcase their technological prowess.

The triumphant team from Anambra comprised Immaculate Ebube Ikegwuonu, Camilla Anyadike, and Nweke-Nonso Oluchi, mentored by their coach, John Onuigbo. Their VR project allows users to explore iconic landmarks like Zuma Rock and delve into the rich cultural heritage of Nigerian tribes, a unique approach that captivated the judges and secured their national championship title.

St. John Vianney's journey to victory was hard-earned. After conquering the Anambra state-level competition, they went on to dominate the Southeastern regional championship, defeating strong teams from Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, and Enugu. This success propelled them to the national stage, where they ultimately emerged victorious against contenders from all 36 states and the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. Rivers and Lagos states secured the second and third-place positions, respectively.

Immaculate Ebube Ikegwuonu expressed the team's joy over the win, saying, “We are so grateful for this opportunity! Thanks to our school which motivates us to pursue careers in ICT. Through this win, we hope to inspire other girls to do the same.”

The director of St. John Vianney Science College, Rev Fr Emmanuel Obimma (Ebube Muo Nso), also shared his pride in the team's accomplishment, stating, “This national championship is a monumental achievement for our school and a source of immense pride. It exemplifies our commitment to empowering young women in STEM fields. As a science college, we understand the impact of technology and empower students to use it as a force for good. Hence, this win isn’t coming as a surprise. It’s the result of years of hard work.”
