SUG-BUK Condemns EFCC Detention of Final-Year Student, Maryam Isah Shehu
The Students’ Union Government of Bayero University, Kano, SUG-BUK, has strongly condemned the continued detention and prosecution of its final-year student, Maryam Isah Shehu, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Maryam Isah Shehu is a 500-Level student of the School of Continuing Education, Bayero University, Kano. She was arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik over an alleged charge of cyberbullying the Commission.
According to SUG-BUK, Maryam has spent 35 days in EFCC custody, including nearly 30 days in detention before her arraignment. She was subsequently remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre, where she is expected to remain until August 31.

The Union noted that the development is particularly distressing as Maryam is scheduled to commence her final examinations on Saturday.
“Was Maryam accused of stealing, fraud, money laundering, or any other economic or financial crime?” SUG-BUK queried in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Comr. Inyasi Hamza.
While acknowledging the right of relevant authorities to investigate and prosecute alleged offences in accordance with the law, the Union expressed deep concern about the circumstances surrounding her prolonged detention and the potential impact on her education.
SUG-BUK called on the relevant authorities to urgently review the circumstances of her detention and facilitate her release, in accordance with due process and the law, to enable her to sit for her final examinations without further hindrance.
The Union reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights, welfare, and academic interests of Bayero University students, and pledged to pursue a fair and lawful resolution to the matter.
