The Governing Council of Summit University has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of its Vice-Chancellor, Abiodun Musa Aibinu, following the completion of his first term in office on March 31, 2026.

The decision was reached during the Council’s 26th meeting held on March 24, 2026, and was subsequently ratified by the university’s Board of Trustees on March 31, according to a statement issued by the institution.

The extension, which takes effect from April 1, 2026, reflects what the university described as strong confidence in Professor Aibinu’s leadership, administrative performance, and contributions to institutional growth over the past four years.

Professor Aibinu, a Professor of Mechatronics Engineering, has overseen major academic, infrastructural, technological, and research-driven transformations within the university since assuming office.

Under his administration, the university recorded significant expansion in academic offerings, including the doubling of undergraduate programmes and the introduction of postgraduate studies.

The institution also strengthened its capacity development initiatives, expanded scholarship opportunities, and recorded sustained growth in student enrolment.

Among the major milestones achieved during his tenure was the establishment of the Kola Balogun College of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Engineering, alongside the College of Innovation and Computing Technology.

The university further advanced plans for the establishment of the Lateefat Gbajabiamila College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, while also introducing several skills acquisition and professional development programmes.

In the area of research and innovation, the university attracted both local and international research grants, increased scholarly publications in high-impact journals, and expanded strategic academic collaborations.

The administration also recorded notable progress in infrastructure development through the construction of new campus facilities and the expansion of institutional estates.

Summit University equally intensified its digital transformation drive under Aibinu’s leadership with the deployment of a Learning Management System (LMS), institutional repository, student and administrative portals, transcript processing systems, and computer-based testing platforms.

The university stated that mentoring structures and academic support systems were also strengthened to improve learning outcomes and institutional efficiency.

On sustainability, the institution disclosed that several campus facilities had transitioned to clean and renewable energy sources as part of broader environmental and operational reforms.

The university further maintained full accreditation status across its academic programmes during the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure.

In addition, the administration introduced several signature courses, including Artificial Intelligence, Acadopreneurship, History, Heritage and Storytelling, and Grantsmanship, aimed at equipping students with interdisciplinary and industry-relevant competencies.
