Tension gripped Igbesa, Ogun State, after operatives of the Ogun State Police Command were accused of assaulting and brutalizing students of the Gateway Institute of Technology following the arrest of a student over alleged possession of a substance described as “black soap.”

The incident, which reportedly escalated into a confrontation between students and police officers at a local division, has sparked outrage among student leaders and renewed public debate over police conduct and the treatment of students in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

According to eyewitness accounts and videos circulating online, the controversy started when a student was stopped and searched by police officers. During the search, officers allegedly discovered a substance identified as “black soap,” leading to the student’s arrest and detention.

The situation reportedly worsened when members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), led by President Ilo Temitope, arrived at the station to demand the release of their colleague.

In one of the viral videos, Temitope alleged that students were denied access to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and were instructed to return the next day. The response reportedly angered students gathered outside the station, who began chanting protest slogans.

The SUG president further claimed that armed officers later arrived at the scene and attempted to intimidate protesting students with firearms during the standoff.

Reports also alleged that Temitope and several other students were assaulted and briefly detained during the confrontation.

Another video circulating online showed a visibly injured student with blood around his mouth accusing security operatives of using excessive force against students at the scene. In the background of one of the videos, a female voice alleged that the SUG president was beaten while in custody.

The videos have since triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians calling for accountability and restraint in the handling of student-related disputes

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) condemned the alleged assault, describing the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.

The student body stated that, if confirmed, the actions of the officers involved would amount to a violation of students’ fundamental human rights and an attack on peaceful student unionism within tertiary institutions.

NANS also demanded an immediate investigation and called on authorities to identify and sanction any officers found culpable.

Student leaders from several institutions across Ogun State similarly called for a public apology from the Igbesa Police Division and stronger protections against harassment, intimidation, and unlawful arrests involving students.

They further urged security agencies to operate within the bounds of the law, especially when dealing with young people in educational environments.

Responding to the allegations, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that it had ordered a full investigation into the incident.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, quoted the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, as assuring the public that the matter would be thoroughly examined to establish the facts surrounding the confrontation.

Authorities appealed for calm and urged all parties to avoid actions capable of escalating tensions while investigations continue.

The incident adds to growing concerns over recurring confrontations between security operatives and students in parts of Nigeria.

Civil society groups and education stakeholders have repeatedly called for improved engagement between law enforcement agencies and young people, stressing the need for accountability, professionalism, and respect for civil liberties.

As investigations continue, many observers say the outcome of the probe could shape public confidence in the police command’s commitment to justice and transparency.
