The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi has stated that with the location of the Solar Farm in the institution, the Federal Government has taken a huge step towards solving a major problem in the University.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi has stated that with the location of the Solar Farm in the institution, the Federal Government has taken a huge step towards solving a major problem in the University.

Prof. Obi who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof Eno Grace Nta stated this at the Council Chamber of the University when she received officials of the Rural Electrification Agency(REA) led by the Zonal Coordinator, South-South, Engr. Rose Ekpenyong.

The Vice Chancellor said the intractable lighting challenge experienced in Nigerian Universities ranging from outages, incredible billing and the escalating cost of diesel will become a thing of the past when the Solar Farm begins production. Prof. Obi noted that aside from the assurance of regular power supply, the project will have a multiplier effect on the University Community, and its environs notably the Host Communities.

She lauded the exemplary concerns of the Cross River State Government towards the actualization of the project, as well as, the commendable effort of the Management of the Rural Electrification Agency(REA) and the contractor on-site.

The University helmsman implored the Federal Government to bring more projects to the University.

The Cross River State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Prince Eka Williams in his remarks said he was elated that the Solar project is domiciled in UNICAL and pledged the readiness of the Cross River State Government to support and collaborate with the institution.

Prince Eka Williams expressed confidence in the ability of the 7 megawatt Solar Farm to power the entire University, and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

He said his Ministry which is saddled with the responsibility of oversight function will offer strong support and collaboration in terms of maintenance and continuity even when the project is completed.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research Linkages & Collaboration, Prof. Peter Okafor,the Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe, the Bursar, Mr. Joseph Odum, the Dir of Works, Engr. Joseph Alaga, the Deputy Dir (Electrical), Engr. Paul Takon and the Director of Administration, Vice Chancellor's office, Dr. Citizen Ekpo were at the event.

Those who accompanied the South-South Zonal Coordinator and the Commissioner to the event include the Permanent Secretary, (AMB) Prof. Thomas Ogboaka, the HOD (ENG,CRS, Min of Power & Renewable Energy) Engr. Archibong Effiwatt, as well as, Engrs Pius Izama and Emmanuel Omaji.
