Tinubu Clarified On Why He Rename University of Maiduguri After Late President Buhari

President Bola Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The announcement was made during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held on July 17, 2025, to commemorate Buhari's life and legacy .

The renaming is a tribute to Buhari's commitment to national security, institutional reform, economic recovery, and anti-corruption efforts during his tenure as President from 2015 to 2023. His administration implemented notable programs such as the Anchor Borrowers' Programme, Treasury Single Account, Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, and social investment schemes, which significantly contributed to national progress .

During the FEC session, Tinubu delivered a stirring tribute, celebrating Buhari's life as one defined by discipline, moral fortitude, and unwavering patriotism. He described Buhari as "a good man, a decent man, an honourable man" whose legacy of discipline, patriotism, and moral uprightness would endure for generations .

Buhari's son, Yusuf, responded to the tributes with tears, flanked by his sisters. Other dignitaries, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, also paid tribute to the late president, praising his principled leadership and commitment to public service 

The renaming of the University of Maiduguri is seen as a symbolic gesture recognizing Buhari's impact on the region, particularly in the northeast, where his administration invested heavily in recovery and reconstruction efforts. The university will serve as a lasting tribute to his legacy, inspiring future generations to uphold the values of service, integrity, and excellence .
