A somber atmosphere enveloped the Federal University Gashua (FUGA) in Yobe State as a devastating fire outbreak engulfed a female hostel, resulting in the tragic loss of a 300-level student's life. Mohammed Goje, the executive secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the distressing incident, which occurred on Saturday.

According to reports from Channels, the fire erupted around 1 pm, rapidly spreading through the hostel's 29 rooms where 301 students resided. The intense blaze claimed the life of a 300-level student, while several others sustained injuries while attempting to flee the inferno.

Efforts were swiftly made to tend to the injured students, with those requiring medical attention receiving treatment at the Gashua Specialist Hospital. A poignant video captured the heart-wrenching scene of Maimuna Wazir, the university's vice-chancellor, consoling students who managed to escape the devastating flames.

Initial assessments attributed the cause of the fire to a cooking gas explosion, although Abubakar Mamudo, the university registrar, stated that investigations into the incident were ongoing to determine the exact cause.
