Tree planting: FULafia VC says campaign will foster eco-friendly environment

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, has said that the 2024 tree planting campaign initiated by his administration will promote greener, healthier and eco-friendly environment.

The vice-chancellor spoke during the 2024 tree planting event in the University.

The event was organised by the FULafia Campus Sanitation and Beautification Unit (CSBU) to mitigate effects of climate change and beautify the environment.

The exercise, tagged: "Plant and Nurture a Tree for a Green FULafia,” was held at the Permanent Site Campus of the University.

The vice-chancellor, while planting a tree, said that the campaign would help to improve the environmental riches of FULafia and add value to the serene institution.

He noted that the development was in line with the institution's commitment to increase students and staff interest to make FULafia look greater and greener and achieve academic excellence.

"Tree planting is an activity  that drives a lot of benefits to the environment and some of us in science know that tree planting help in cleaning the air around us, reduce levels soil erosion, water pollution, protects the ozone layers and, above all, we are encouraged by our religion to plant tree and have a big reward for that.”

Commending the efforts of the organisers of the event, the vice-chancellor said that the unit has not only "succeeded in keeping our environment clean but ensures that the campus is green."

He advised them to form what he called a "green environment club" for students and staff to enhance and sustain the practice of planting of trees in the two campuses of the University.

The vice-chancellor announced the donation of 200 tree seedlings to commemorate the event. 

Abdul Rahman thanked the NGOs and other individuals that collaborated with the organisers to hold the event, urging students and staff to plant trees.
