UCH Marks 2025 World Patient Safety Day with Focus on Child and Newborn Care

World Patient Safety Day, observed annually on September 17, is an initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO) aimed at reducing avoidable harm in healthcare. This year’s theme, “Safe Care for Every Newborn and Every Child,” with the slogan, “Patient Care from the Start,” highlighted the importance of protecting children and newborns from medical errors and preventable risks.

Speaking at the event, Head of the Paediatrics Department, Prof. Biobele Brown, lauded the hospital management for supporting the campaign in line with the Federal Ministry of Health’s directives. He stressed that the observance emphasizes prevention through education, training, and safer practices in healthcare delivery.
In her goodwill message, Head of Public Health Nursing, Mrs. Adeola Oladiran, described Patient Safety Day as a global movement that champions preventive care over curative measures. She expressed appreciation to the hospital’s leadership for its continued commitment.

The Head of Clinical Nursing, Mrs. Rebecca Ishabiyi, noted that the focus on newborns and children underscores their vulnerability to medical errors and infections. She called for stricter adherence to safety protocols, training, and systems designed to safeguard young patients from harm.
Representing the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, the Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (Education and Training), Prof. Olusola Ibiyemi, reaffirmed UCH’s dedication to patient safety. He emphasized that the commemoration aligns with the hospital’s mandate of ensuring patient comfort and staff welfare.
He further extended greetings on behalf of the Honourable Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, the CMD, and the entire hospital community, noting that the event reinforces UCH’s role in advancing safe and quality healthcare.
