UI Inaugurates Truth and Reconciliation Committee to Heal Institutional Grievances

The University of Ibadan (UI) has taken a significant step towards strengthening harmony within its community with the inauguration of the University’s Truth and Reconciliation Committee.

The initiative, led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, mni, FAS, emphasizes the importance of peace, unity, and mutual understanding across the institution.

The ceremony, held at the Vice-Chancellor’s Board Room, reflects ongoing efforts by the University management to address internal challenges, resolve grievances, and promote a culture of reconciliation and collaboration.

Speaking at the event, Professor Adebowale underscored that the University draws its strength from the diversity and commitment of its staff and students. Acknowledging the diversity that exists among members of the university community in terms of culture, profession, orientation and administrative issues, he admitted that differences must be carefully managed to ensure that the University continues to thrive. He explained that the committee was established in response to emerging concerns about misunderstandings, grievances, and diminishing trust among some members of the University community. 

Prof. Adebowale emphasized that the committee is not about assigning blame, but about examining issues fairly, listening to all parties, and recommending practical pathways toward reconciliation and improved working relationships.”

According to him, the committee’s terms of reference include investigating the causes of conflicts, receiving confidential submissions from affected individuals, documenting grievances, and facilitating mediation among conflicting parties. Members are also tasked with recommending administrative and structural measures to prevent future disputes and promote a culture of forgiveness and mutual respect.

He assured that all proceedings would be guided by confidentiality, integrity, and respect, with the committee operating within a defined timeframe and submitting a comprehensive report with recommendations to the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.

The committee, which is chaired by Emeritus Professor O.A Ojengbede includes elders of the University, as well as other distinguished members and was duly inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor.

Speaking on behalf of the committee, Professor Ojengbede expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the committee, pledging that it would carry out its duties with fairness, wisdom, and dedication. 

He acknowledged that the ultimate goal of the committee is to restore peace and strengthen relationships within the University community, affirming the commitment of the committee towards achieving this. 

The inauguration of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee underscores UI’s commitment to building a peaceful, inclusive, and supportive environment that promotes both academic excellence and institutional growth.
