UI Longest-Serving Vice-Chancellor, Emeritus Professor Ayo Banjo, Passes Away at 90

Emeritus Professor Ayo Banjo, the longest-serving Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), has passed away at the age of 90. The news was confirmed by former UI Vice-Chancellor Idowu Olayinka.

Emeritus Professor of English and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Ayo Banjo, has passed away at the age of 90. The news was confirmed by UI’s immediate past Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Geology, Idowu Olayinka.

Olayinka, who considered Banjo a mentor, shared the news of his passing, initially discovered through a group page of the Chapel of Resurrection, where Banjo worshipped. This was further corroborated by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at UI.

Banjo, a distinguished figure in Nigeria’s education sector, celebrated his 90th birthday on May 2. His tenure at UI included roles as acting vice-chancellor from November 1983 to November 1984 and substantive vice-chancellor from December 1984 to November 1991. He also served as Chairman of the Governing Council of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and held similar positions at the University of Port Harcourt and Ajayi Crowther University.

In his tribute, titled “Adieu Professor Ayo Banjo, 1934 to 2024,” Olayinka praised Banjo as “an icon and an eminent citizen of the world,” acknowledging his significant contributions and lasting legacy. Olayinka expressed deep sadness at Banjo's passing, noting the profound impact Banjo had on his mentees and the academic community.

The spokesperson for UI, Joke Akinpelu, has yet to officially confirm the details surrounding Banjo’s death but promised to provide updates.

Professor Banjo’s passing marks the end of an era for UI and Nigeria's academic landscape. His extensive service and dedication to education have left an indelible mark on the institutions he served and the many lives he touched.
