University of Ibadan has reiterated the importance of professional procurement systems in driving efficiency, transparency, and value for money in institutional governance.

The Vice-Chancellor, Kayode O. Adebowale, made the remarks while receiving a delegation from the Association of Public Procurement Practitioners of Nigeria on a courtesy visit to his office.

Professor Adebowale stated that a well-structured procurement framework remains central to institutional sustainability, stressing that effective procurement practices ensure accountability and optimal use of resources.

He explained that procurement is fundamentally about sourcing the right goods and services from the right providers, describing it as a critical function in every modern organisation.

The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the University of Ibadan operates a robust procurement system anchored on due process, including detailed tender evaluations and regular committee-based reviews.

According to him, the institution carries out procurement activities in strict compliance with the provisions of the Public Procurement Act, noting that a clear understanding of the law is essential for credibility and efficiency in procurement operations.

Professor Adebowale also expressed the university’s support for professional bodies working to strengthen procurement practice, adding that initiatives promoting transparency, accountability, and capacity development align with the university’s institutional values.

He further affirmed UI’s openness to collaborations that enhance professional development and improve administrative efficiency across systems.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Olubukola Shittu, said the visit was aimed at formally introducing the association to the university management and informing it about the inauguration of its Oyo State chapter.

She described the association as a leading professional body committed to advancing best practices in procurement across both public and private sectors.

According to her, the organisation focuses on promoting transparency, accountability, and strict compliance with procurement regulations, while also building capacity for procurement professionals.

She added that the association serves as a platform for procurement officers to engage, address operational challenges, and develop practical solutions to improve efficiency and decision-making processes.

Mrs. Shittu also briefed the Vice-Chancellor on the forthcoming Procurement Day, a global professional event designed to bring together stakeholders across sectors to share knowledge, promote innovation, and strengthen procurement systems.

The event, she noted, will also provide opportunities for collaboration and the exchange of ideas aimed at improving procurement governance and institutional performance.

The visit was concluded with assurances of continued collaboration between both institutions in advancing professional procurement standards and administrative excellence.
