UniAbuja Launches World Bank-Assisted Aquaculture TVET Program for 200 Trainees
The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has officially commenced its IDEAS/TVET training program in Aquaculture Enterprise, welcoming an inaugural cohort of 200 trainees. The six-month intensive program, supported by the World Bank, is designed to bridge the skills gap in the fisheries sector and foster grassroots economic empowerment.
During the orientation ceremony held today, January 13, 2026, the Training Programme Manager, Professor Hauwa Imam, highlighted the practical nature of the curriculum. She noted that the initiative is specifically structured to equip beneficiaries with the technical expertise required to run successful aquaculture businesses, thereby driving national economic growth. Professor Imam urged the participants to remain dedicated, emphasizing that the opportunity serves as a significant pathway for self-development and financial independence.
Formally declaring the program open, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, remarked that the initiative is a direct reflection of the Federal Government’s commitment to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
“This training reflects the government's focus on hands-on learning, entrepreneurship, and national development,” Professor Fawehinmi stated. He further assured the project team of the University’s unwavering administrative support to ensure the successful execution of the six-month course.
The Innovation Development and Effectiveness in Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) project is a strategic intervention aimed at enhancing the Nigerian vocational education system. By focusing on aquaculture, UniAbuja aims to bolster food security and provide sustainable livelihoods for the youth and entrepreneurs within the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.
