UNIABUJA Veterinary Students Win Prestigious IVSA CEVA Grant

Students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Abuja have achieved a significant milestone by winning the International Veterinary Students Association (IVSA) CEVA grant. The President of the IVSA University of Abuja chapter, Mohammad Halima Idris, announced that the chapter successfully navigated the rigorous grant application and project proposal process, earning recognition for UofA’s veterinary students as part of the top global institutions offering veterinary medicine.

Halima explained that the grant would fund various initiatives, including educational campaigns in schools to highlight the vital role veterinarians play in the health sector. Additionally, the grant will support free deworming, first aid, consultation, and ectoparasite control services. Awareness programs on responsible pet and livestock ownership and visits to abattoirs to promote humane practices in livestock transportation, treatment, and slaughter are also part of the planned activities.

"This remarkable achievement reflects the hard work, dedication, and innovative spirit of our members," Halima stated. She expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the University’s management, noting that the guidance and resources provided to the students have been crucial to the chapter’s growth and success.

Of the 33 applications submitted from around the world to the IVSA headquarters in Belgium, only nine countries were awarded the grant, including Nigeria, Egypt, and Malawi. Nigeria's success was further highlighted by the fact that the University of Abuja, along with two other Nigerian veterinary schools, were among the recipients.
