UNIBEN Medical Student, Itegboje Daniel Makes Waves in Film, Competes for Oscars Award

Itegboje Daniel, a talented filmmaker and dedicated 500-level student of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), is making waves in the film industry by bagging multiple awards and competing in the Oscars for the qualifying shorts category at the Durban International Film Festival. His latest project, "O.Y.O (On Your Own)," has made history as the only Nigerian film competing in the Oscar qualifying shorts category at the Durban International Film Festival.

Itegboje Daniel, a talented filmmaker and dedicated 500-level student of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), is making waves in the film industry by bagging multiple awards and competing in the Oscars for the qualifying shorts category at the Durban International Film Festival. 

Reflecting on his journey, Daniel shared, "I fell in love with medicine and documentary filmmaking and was admitted to study medicine and surgery at the University of Benin in 2018. Medicine and documentary filmmaking felt poles apart and impossible but I felt determined to make it work."

"Over the years, I have been able to find a delicate blend between medicine and documentary filmmaking by the grace of Elohim. I am currently in my 5th year in medicine and surgery at the University of Benin and have won awards for my documentary films," he added.

 Now in his 5th year of Medicine and Surgery at UNIBEN, he has garnered acclaim for his documentary films, which have been featured in 18 international film festivals across 4 continents, including countries like the United States, Canada, France, and South Africa. His latest project, "O.Y.O (On Your Own)," has made history as the only Nigerian film competing in the Oscar qualifying shorts category at the Durban International Film Festival.

With the winner of this category earning a spot in the prestigious Oscars race, Itegboje acknowledges it as a long shot but remains hopeful, stating, "A boy can only dream." Despite his growing success in the film industry, Itegboje remains committed to his passion for medicine, with a lofty goal of making a global impact on health and societal outcomes through storytelling.
