UNIDEL Boosts Medical Education Infrastructure as Prof. Chiemeke Commissions Renovated Faculties
Barely a week after the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, inaugurated a string of landmark academic facilities at the University of Delta (UNIDEL) as part of its maiden convocation ceremony, the institution has sustained its development momentum with the commissioning of additional projects.
On Thursday, February 26, 2026, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIDEL, Prof. Stella Chiemeke, led a delegation of principal officers — including full members of Management, Deans, Directors and Heads of Departments, other staff to formally commission newly renovated buildings for the College of Clinical Medicine and Basic Medical Sciences.
The event, though modest in ceremony, underscored the University’s deliberate push to strengthen its medical education infrastructure while awaiting the completion of its permanent College of Medicine Complex, which remains under construction.
Speaking shortly before cutting the ceremonial tape, Prof. Chiemeke expressed profound appreciation to the Institution’s Governing Council for approving funds that made the extensive renovation and upgrade possible within what she described as record time.
She noted that the intervention was both strategic and necessary to ensure that academic activities within the Faculties continued uninterruptedly and in an environment conducive to learning.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the refurbished structures will serve as temporary operational base for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Basic Medical Sciences pending the delivery of the College of Medicine Complex.
She emphasized that while the accommodation was interim, the standards applied to the renovation reflected the University’s long-term vision for excellence in medical training.
“These facilities may be temporary, but the quality of teaching, research and clinical preparation that will take place here is permanent in its impact,” she said, charging the leadership of the two Faculties to maximize the opportunity provided by the upgraded environment.
Prof. Chiemeke specifically urged the Deans of Clinical Medicine and Basic Medical Sciences to ensure proper utilization and maintenance of the renovated buildings, stressing that prudent management of facilities was critical to sustaining institutional growth and safeguarding investments made for the benefit of students.
During an inspection tour of the premises, the Vice-Chancellor demonstrated hands-on oversight, directing contractors to address outstanding structural and environmental concerns.
She ordered the immediate construction of a drainage gutter to channel rainwater away from one of the soak-away systems in the facility, a move aimed at preventing erosion and maintaining sanitation standards. She also instructed that the entire compound be thoroughly cleaned to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of the environment.
The commissioning marks another milestone in UNIDEL’s expanding infrastructure footprint and signals a leadership style anchored on accountability, responsiveness and forward planning.
Coming on the heels of the recent inauguration of the Management and Social Sciences Complex, Engineering Lecture Halls, Library and Workshops, and the Faculty of Environmental Sciences by Governor Oborevwori, the latest development reinforces the University’s commitment to rapid but sustainable growth.
For stakeholders, the message is clear: beyond ceremonial ribbon-cutting, the institution’s leadership is focused on ensuring that every facility — temporary or permanent — met the standards required to produce competent graduates, particularly in critical fields such as medicine and basic medical sciences.
As construction continues on the College of Medicine Complex, the newly refurbished buildings stand as both stopgaps and a statement that UNIDEL is determined not to delay progress, and that strategic investment in infrastructure remains central to its academic mission.
