The University of Delta (UNIDEL), Agbor, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, held its historic maiden Inaugural Lecture at the institution’s 1000 Capacity Hall, with Professor Emmanuel Osabohien, a Professor of Industrial Chemistry and Materials Science, delivering the lecture.
In his address titled “The Material World and Its Knowabilities: The Perspectives of an Industrial Chemist,” Professor Osabohien called on the Federal and State Governments to increase funding for materials research in higher institutions. He stressed that such investment would pave the way for inventions and innovations capable of creating industries, generating employment, and reducing poverty.

He emphasized the need for synergy between government, non-governmental organizations, universities, polytechnics, and research institutes in advancing industrial and economic growth through impactful research. He noted that industrialization had facilitated the production of essentials such as toiletries, textiles, paints, cosmetics, rubber, plastics, and advanced products including modern buildings, machinery, automobiles, and aerospace technology.
“We must endeavor to do our own things, our own way — grow our indigenous companies and technologies using our available local raw materials for sustainable economic growth and development,” Professor Osabohien cautioned.
Highlighting the role of industrial chemists in applying chemical knowledge to improve processes and products, he pointed out the enormous contributions of materials science and engineering to global development. He further raised concerns over increasing environmental pollution driven by industrialization and human activities, urging a shift towards green technology. He advised the adoption of safe production practices and sustainable use of materials to achieve a cleaner environment while nurturing indigenous technologies to maturity.

The well-attended event featured the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Emeritus Professor Emmanuel Nwanze, alongside the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stella Chiemeke, who led the management team including Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patricia Mbah; Registrar, Barrister Richmond Omagbemi; and University Librarian, Dr. Vera Okonoko. Also present were members of the Governing Council, Deans of Faculties, Directors, Heads of Departments, royal fathers, and other distinguished academics.
