UNILAG DLI Facilitator Advocates Adoption of Mercedes Model of Teaching
Dr. Adenike J. Oladipo, a DLI facilitator and e-tutor at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), advocated for the implementation of the Mercedes Model of teaching during the March edition of the Distance Learning Institute's monthly series.
Dr. Adenike J. Oladipo, a DLI facilitator and e-tutor, has urged educators in secondary schools and higher institutions to embrace the Mercedes Model of teaching for enhanced learning outcomes. This call was made during the March edition of the Distance Learning Institute (DLI), University of Lagos (UNILAG) monthly series, held on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at the DLI Boardroom, Red Bricks, UNILAG.
Dr. Oladipo addressed the audience on the topic "Cruising into Effective Teaching and Learning: The Mercedes Model," wherein she emphasized the necessity of a teaching approach that prioritizes students' understanding and engagement. She highlighted the urgency for a method that fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills, rather than mere memorization of information.
The Mercedes Model, devised by Gallagher J. J. (2000), draws parallels between teaching and the design of a Mercedes Benz, featuring three compartments: building a knowledge base, generating understanding, and finding application. Dr. Oladipo elaborated on the model's principles and discussed 13 teaching/assessment strategies, including journal writing, mind stretcher exercises, student-generated questions, peer analysis, and the use of models, pictures, and diagrams.
The presentation attracted both physical and online participants, including students from secondary schools in the Shomolu and Akoka areas. Dr. Oladipo's insightful lecture provided attendees with practical insights into effective teaching practices aligned with the Mercedes Model.
The event underscored the commitment of UNILAG's DLI to promote innovative teaching methodologies and enhance the quality of education delivery. As educators continue to explore new approaches to teaching and learning, the adoption of models like Mercedes can contribute to creating dynamic and engaging learning environments for students.
