In a thought-provoking address, Professor Simeon Oludiran Akinleye, a distinguished Professor of Development Economics at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), advocated for a renewed emphasis on rural development as a crucial pathway to achieving sustainable and inclusive growth in Nigeria. The professor delivered the insightful lecture titled "Robbing Peter to Pay Paul: Formulating an Agenda for Redressing Unbalanced Development" during the 4th Inaugural Lecture of the 2023/2024 Academic Session on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.
Professor Akinleye underscored the need for an integrated approach that recognizes the interconnectedness between rural and urban areas to attain sustainable development. He traced Nigeria's economic evolution from an agrarian society to one heavily reliant on crude oil, emphasizing the detrimental impact of this transition on rural areas.

Born on November 10, 1973, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Professor Akinleye has an extensive academic background, holding degrees in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan. He has contributed significantly to the academic community and currently serves as the Head of the Department of Economics at UNILAG. Beyond his academic achievements, Professor Akinleye has played pivotal roles in various university committees and has been elected President of the University of Lagos Senior Staff Club.
