The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Students Forum of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE) held its second symposium on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at the Design Studio, Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS).

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Students Forum of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE) held its second symposium on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at the Design Studio, Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS).

With the theme Built to Evolve, Adapt, Grow and Thrive in Mechanical Engineering, the event also served as a reunion, drawing several alumni of the Department of Mechanical Engineering who contributed to discussions on the changing dynamics in the field and practice of Mechanical Engineering in Nigeria.

Resource persons included Engineers Seun Faluyi, Bayo Erinle, and Temitope Okunoren-Makindipe, who each shared insights and advice on the symposium’s theme. Attendees were encouraged to network, uphold strong values, embrace mentorship, nurture creativity, and develop interpersonal, people management, and problem-solving skills.

Representing the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Adekunle Adelaja, Dr. Olabode Olakoyejo congratulated the students on successfully hosting the symposium. He urged them to reflect on the theme and use their knowledge to address real-world challenges.

A panel session featured industry experts from various sectors, including Engineer Samuel Shokunbi (Manufacturing), Engineer Titilayo Sodipo (Automobile), Dr. Manasseh Shitta (Energy), Engineer Olasunkanmi Bello (Aerospace), and Engineer Ibrahim Ogundeko (Air Conditioning). They discussed pressing issues in their specializations, emphasizing the importance for students to broaden their interests, build diverse skills, grow competence, and prepare for the impact of emerging technologies.

The event also showcased student achievements in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, alongside the unveiling of awards for notable contributors and winners of the Innovate Local 3D Printing and Prototyping Challenge.
