The University of Lagos Fire Service is well on its way to better servicing its host communities and Lagos state in disaster and emergency management.
This formed the crux of a meeting between the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Management Services (DVC MS), Prof. Lucian Chukwu, the UNILAG Fire Service team and Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osayintolu, on Monday, July 24, 2023.
Prof. Chukwu had, during the meeting, proposed various areas of collaboration between LASEMA and the University. These areas include:
Training and retraining of UNILAG Fire Service personnel, redesigning the curriculum of the Masters in Disaster Management (MDM).
Serving as resource persons for various programmes of the University including the UNILAG Business School
The DVC also highlighted the need for a LASEMA Rapid Response Squad (RRS) to be sited in the University.
The Acting Head of the UNILAG Fire Service, Mr. Wasiu Oriyomi Jimoh called for the support of the Agency and Lagos State Government for the provision of top-notch fire-fighting equipment and gear.
in response, the LASEMA boss disclosed plans to train UNILAG fire-fighters in “Search and Rescue”, and affirmed that a RRS would be sited in UNILAG within the next two (2) weeks.
On the issue of provision of fire-fighting equipment, Dr. Oke-Osayintolu declared the Agency’s readiness to link the University with its technical partner, “Logic City” to provide these services and be paid in instalments.
Dr. Oke-Osayintolu, while backing the proposal made by the DVC, added that LASEMA could help with the demolition of old buildings at no cost to the University.
After the meeting with the DVC MS, the team moved to the 11th floor office of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, where she reaffirmed the University’s commitment to servicing its host communities and suggested a name upgrade of the UNILAG Fire Service to accommodate disaster management. She expressed delight at LASEMA’s resolutions and readiness to collaborate with the University of Lagos.
