In a thought-provoking inaugural lecture delivered at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Ademola Ayodeji Oremosu, a distinguished Professor of Anatomy, called for a comprehensive restructuring of the traditional Department of Anatomy in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Prof. Oremosu proposed the re-naming of the department to the Department of Anatomical Sciences, with specialized units aligned with contemporary realities in the field.
Delivering his lecture titled "Searching for the Living among the Dead: A Contemporary Anatomist’s Paradigm" at the J.F. Ade Ajayi (Main) Auditorium of UNILAG, Prof. Oremosu provided insightful recommendations aimed at enhancing the relevance and effectiveness of anatomy education and research in Nigeria.
Highlighting the need for innovation, Prof. Oremosu advocated for the establishment of units such as Neurosciences, Reproductive Biology, Optics and Advanced Microscopy, Anthropometry and Growth Science, Gross and Clinical Anatomy, Development Anatomy, and Genetics and AI Anatomy within the department. These specialized units, he argued, would better address contemporary demands and facilitate multidisciplinary research in the field.
