UNILAG Professor Urges FG to Safeguard Farmers and Enhance Food Security
University of Lagos Professor has called on Federal Government to address food insecurity in Nigeria.
A distinguished expert in Aquaculture Nutrition at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Ademola Zaid Aderolu, has called on the Federal Government to prioritize the protection and support of farmers across the nation.
Speaking during the twenty-fourth Inaugural Lecture of the 2023/2024 Academic Session at UNILAG, Prof. Aderolu emphasized the urgent need to address food security threats arising from kidnapping and farmer-herder clashes.
The lecture, titled "Food-Feed Struggle, the Nutritionist as an Umpire," highlighted critical issues related to fisheries production and nutrition. Prof. Aderolu recommended scholarships for students studying agriculture-related courses to enhance the appeal of these fields. He also stressed the importance of collaboration between academia, industry, and government in tackling fisheries challenges.
In his research findings, Prof. Aderolu underscored the significance of fish as an animal protein source. Fish provides essential nutrients at a lower environmental cost compared to terrestrial livestock. Moreover, its wide acceptability across various religious and socio-economic groups makes it crucial for global nutrition.
The professor advocated for balanced fish feeds to promote growth, health, and productivity. He also supported a circular system of nutrition, which conserves resources and protects the environment while ensuring nutritious food for all. Prof. Aderolu's expertise contributes significantly to addressing malnutrition and food insecurity in Nigeria.
