The project received accolades from the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. Musa Obalola, and students' representatives, who praised the university's commitment to student welfare. The Mariere Hostel, named after the late Chief Samuel Jereton Mariere, the first Governor of the former Midwest State of Nigeria and the first Chancellor of UNILAG, has been providing accommodation since 1974.

With the successful completion of the Mariere Hostel renovation, the university plans to embark on similar projects for other students' halls of residence, including Makama Bida, Eni Njoku, and Biobaku. The revamped hostel not only promises enhanced comfort for students but also aims to foster a stronger sense of community and enrich the overall student experience at UNILAG.
