The University of Lagos (UNILAG) reaffirmed its commitment to hosting a "Window on America" center as officials from the United States Consulate in Lagos and the US Embassy in Ghana visited the campus on Wednesday, November 19, 2024.
Samuel Eyitayo, representing the US Consulate in Lagos, and Liza Steger, a Regional Public Engagement Specialist from the US Embassy in Ghana, met with senior UNILAG officials to review progress on the initiative. The Window on America center, announced earlier this year on March 20, 2024, aims to establish a hub for cultural and educational exchange between the United States and the university community.
During a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor's Office, the team was warmly received by Deputy Vice-Chancellors Professor Ayo Atsenuwa (Development Services) and Professor Lucian Chukwu (Management Services), as well as other university executives.
Sam Eyitayo described the project as "on course," adding, "We currently have 25 American Spaces in Nigeria and aim to expand to 30 across 24 cities by March 2025. The UNILAG hub promises to be a valuable addition, offering numerous opportunities for the university community."
Echoing this enthusiasm, Liza Steger praised the proposed center’s potential to serve as a resource hub for students and staff, emphasizing its role in fostering cultural exchange and providing information on studying in the United States.
Professor Atsenuwa expressed the university’s dedication to the initiative, noting, "UNILAG is a global community, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunities this project will unlock for our students and staff."
Following the meeting, the visiting team toured the proposed site for the center, as well as other notable locations on campus, including the Main Library and the UNILAG Confucius Institute.
When completed, the Window on America at UNILAG will serve as a walk-in space for students and staff to access resources on studying in the US and explore aspects of American culture, solidifying the university's role as a hub for international engagement.
