UNILORIN Professor Warns Female Students About Egg Donation
A professor at the University of Ilorin's Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Hadijat Olaide Raji, has cautioned female students against the rising trend of egg donation, citing potential health and ethical implications.
According to Prof. Raji, while egg donation may seem like a quick way to earn money, it can have serious consequences that many students may not be aware of.
The professor explained that egg donation involves hormonal stimulation, which can lead to complications such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). OHSS can cause symptoms ranging from mild to severe and even life-threatening.
Prof. Raji urged students to seek proper medical guidance and critically evaluate the potential consequences of egg donation before considering it. She also called on the University Health Services Unit, student groups, and relevant government agencies to intensify education on reproductive health and the ethics surrounding egg donation.
In addition to warning students about egg donation, Prof. Raji advised female students to prioritize their overall wellness by adopting healthy eating habits, avoiding excessive junk food, and staying hydrated. She also emphasized the importance of regular exercise, developing healthy relationships, and getting enough sleep.
The professor further urged students to seek accurate health information and avoid risky sexual behaviors, recommending the ABC approach to preventing sexually transmitted infections: abstinence, being faithful, and condom use. She also advised students to shun drugs, alcohol, and substance abuse and to promptly visit the University Clinic for any health concerns.
