UNILORIN Veterinary Teaching Hospital Director Prof. Raufu Ibrahim Calls on Community to Utilize Services
Prof. Raufu Ibrahim calls on Ilorin residents to prioritize animal health by patronizing the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, which offers state-of-the-art facilities and expert care.
Prof. Raufu Ibrahim, Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) at the University of Ilorin, has called on residents of Ilorin and neighboring communities to utilize the hospital's services to promote the health of their livestock and pets. In a recent interview, Prof. Ibrahim emphasized the significance of animal health, stating, "The health of the animals around us is as important as human health. The quality of what we consume determines the quality of our health."
Prof. Ibrahim highlighted that the VTH is equipped with modern facilities, including laboratories for immunology, virology, bacteriology, and hematology, as well as ultrasound and X-ray machines, surgical units, and an intensive care unit. He noted that the hospital employs qualified professionals skilled in managing animal health.
Despite these resources, he expressed concern that many locals, particularly livestock farmers and pet owners, have not fully embraced the available services. He pointed out that diseases like tuberculosis, rabies, and brucellosis can be effectively managed if reported to the hospital early. "Those who rear livestock such as cattle, goats, sheep, and poultry, as well as pet owners, should engage veterinary doctors for optimal productivity," he urged.
Prof. Ibrahim also stressed the importance of regular vaccinations for dogs to protect them and the community from zoonotic diseases. The VTH offers various services, including pregnancy diagnosis, surgical procedures for difficult births, and boarding for traveling animals, often at minimal fees.
Located conveniently in town, the VTH aims to foster a strong relationship between the university and its host community. Prof. Ibrahim praised the university's administration for its ongoing support, which has kept the VTH at the forefront of veterinary services in the region. He mentioned that the hospital serves as a training ground for students from various higher education institutions in Kwara State and beyond.
The VTH is recognized as one of the best-equipped facilities of its kind in Nigeria, and it is the only operational veterinary hospital in Ilorin and the North-Central geopolitical zone. Prof. Ibrahim reassured the community of the hospital's commitment to delivering high-quality veterinary services.
