The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has reversed its initial stance regarding a recent sexual harassment allegation involving one of its lecturers. A 51-second viral video showing a male lecturer harassing an unidentified female student has circulated on social media, raising serious concerns among the public and the university community.

Initially, the university's Head of Information, Publications, and Public Relations, Dr. Sam Kpenu, dismissed the allegations, stating that a preliminary investigation confirmed that the incident did not occur on the UNIPORT campus and that no staff member was involved. He emphasized that the university had no reported incidents of sexual harassment involving faculty members.

However, after convening an emergency meeting on Tuesday, the university's management made a decisive U-turn, launching a special investigative panel to examine the incident and submit its findings within five days. The move demonstrates UNIPORT's commitment to addressing allegations of misconduct with urgency and transparency.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, issued a statement explaining that the establishment of the investigative committee reflects the university's dedication to upholding ethical standards and ensuring the safety and welfare of its students.

The investigative committee comprises the following members:

- Professor Jonah S. Aprioku (Chairman)

- Professor Emeka Ehirim (Member)

- Professor Agatha Ozah (Member)

- Professor Edwinah Amah (Member)

- Dr. Edward Bristol Alagberiya (Member)
