The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has clarified that the popular sign-out tradition for final-year students has not been banned by the school management.
This was contained in a public notice dated September 3, 2025, and jointly signed by the Executive President, Rt. Hon. Harmony Lawrence, and the General Secretary, Comr. Okoli Victor Chimaobi.
According to the statement, final-year students are free to celebrate the milestone but must do so in a peaceful, responsible, and orderly manner. The SUG advised students to avoid reckless driving within and outside the school environment, shun alcohol, hard drugs, and misconduct, and to comply fully with the university’s rules and regulations.
The union further emphasized the need to respect the safety and wellbeing of fellow students, staff, and the public during the celebrations.

“The SUG remains committed to protecting the interests of students while also upholding the image of our institution. We urge all finalists to celebrate responsibly so that this tradition is preserved for future classes,” the notice read in part.
The statement concluded with a congratulatory message to the graduating students, wishing them success in their future endeavors. Copies of the notice were also sent to the Vice Chancellor, the Dean of Student Affairs, and the Chief Security Officer for records and necessary action.
