The Law Faculty of the University of Uyo, has emerged overall winners of the 2022 International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition (IHLMC) that took place from 6th – 7th July, 2022 in Abuja again, Myschoolnews report.
This was disclosed when the Dean, Faculty of Law, Prof. Mojisola Eseyin led other staff members of the Faculty to a courtesy visit on the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Prof. Nyaudoh Ndaeyo at the Council Chamber, Main Campus on Monday, November 7, 2022.
While addressing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eseyin disclosed that the Faculty of Law, University of Uyo, had won the 11th International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (ICRC). She further disclosed that, UNIUYO having won at the national rounds, shall represent Nigeria at the regional rounds in Tanzania.
She also explained that the ICRC was established in 1863, operates worldwide, with the aim of helping those affected by conflict and violence, and also poised at promoting the laws and protect victims of war. The Dean of Law stated that the ICRC is an independent and neutral organization that moots its mandate from the Geneva Convention of 1949 in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to her, “ICRC takes action in response to emergency, international humanitarian law and its implementation. It also organizes International Humanitarian Law Competition for Universities yearly. The Faculty was represented by Edem Okon Uwem; Chinemeihenile Nwadike; and Ndianaabasi George. For the records, this win makes it the fourth time Faculty of Law, University of Uyo has emerged overall winners, making it the only University in Nigeria to win more than once in history. First, the University of Uyo won in 2015, second in 2017, third in 2019 and in 2022”.
Prof. Eseyin hinted that the secret behind such feat is evidence that the University Management under the leadership of Prof. Nyaudoh Ndaeyo has provided enabling environment for the Faculty of Law to teach, research and uphold academic excellence. She also presented a trophy won to the University Management.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Prof. Nyaudoh Ndaeyo appreciated God for the journey mercy granted the students who took part in the competition. He informed the visiting Faculty that, the Management received the goodnews of their success with great joy, adding that, he was impressed of such good news.
The Vice-Chancellor also stressed the fact that success UNIUYO recorded in the just concluded 2022 International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition was as a result of the University students’ hard work and diligence.
He specifically thanked the Law Students who represented the Faculty of Law for a successful outing in Abuja, urging them to continue to remain good ambassadors of the University of Uyo wherever they find themselves. Prof. Ndaeyo also commended the Lecturers and Staff in the Faculty of Law for a job well done and for sacrifice they have made to keep “UNIUYO a Brand”.
The Vice-Chancellor again said that, the victory was not just for the University of Uyo but for Nigeria, as the competition was organized to project the image of African Universities. He prayed God to continually bless the students as they are the present hope of the University.
