University of Ibadan Partners with University of Edinburgh to Tackle Climate Change Challenges

The University of Ibadan (UI) has formalized a strategic partnership with the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at addressing climate change and fostering innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

The University of Ibadan (UI) has formalized a strategic partnership with the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at addressing climate change and fostering innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

The signing ceremony, which took place recently, saw Professor A.S. Jegede, Director of UI’s Research Management Office, represent the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, emphasizing the university’s commitment to research-driven innovation and societal impact.

Professor Jegede highlighted that UI, as Nigeria’s oldest and leading university, continues to leverage its research capacity to generate solutions for critical global issues. He described the partnership with the University of Edinburgh as a landmark initiative that will strengthen collaboration in climate change research, technology adaptation, policy engagement, and business enterprise.

The collaboration is anchored on the Earth Initiative Project, which seeks to explore practical and technological solutions to climate-related challenges. Professor Jegede lauded the University of Edinburgh for selecting UI as a partner, noting the long-standing academic relationship between the two institutions.

Leading the University of Edinburgh team, Professor Margaret Oliver praised UI staff and students for their dedication and academic excellence. She noted that the MoU would formalize ongoing collaborative efforts, bringing together specialists to develop innovative strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Earlier, Professor Omobolaji Omobowale, Head of UI’s Department of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, explained that a research team from UI had previously visited Edinburgh to explore potential collaboration. The University of Edinburgh subsequently funded six student-led projects aimed at adapting technology to address climate change, turning research ideas into practical business solutions.

Professor Omobowale said the MoU provides a platform for joint research publications, collaborative climate change projects, and staff and student exchange programs. He added that UI is leveraging Edinburgh’s climate change policy to develop its own, with a first draft of the UI Climate Change Policy already produced.

Other dignitaries from the University of Edinburgh present at the ceremony included Mrs. Lucy Young, Dr. Geoffrey Banda, and Dr. Seth Amanfo, while the UI Climate Change Research Team included Prof. Funmilola Ajani, Prof. Abiodun Oluwafemi Oluwadare, Dr. Tolulope E. Kolajo, alongside two student beneficiaries, Engr. Yusuf Ibrahim Olalekan and Mr. Ogunniyi Adetomiwa.

The partnership signals a significant step in UI’s ongoing commitment to research, innovation, and practical solutions in addressing climate change while fostering global academic collaboration.
