The University of Maiduguri on November 20, 2025 received a delegation from the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri, alongside a supervising representative from the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom, Plateau State, during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, at the Muhammadu Buhari Senate Building.

The University of Maiduguri on November 20, 2025 received a delegation from the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri, alongside a supervising representative from the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom, Plateau State, during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, at the Muhammadu Buhari Senate Building.

During the engagement, the Vice-Chancellor commended the AMR Laboratory for its expanding contributions to animal health, research, and community-focused interventions across Borno State and neighbouring regions. He noted that the laboratory’s achievements mirror the University’s strategic commitment to confronting critical public and animal health challenges in Nigeria and reaffirmed Management’s readiness to strengthen institutional support for the laboratory’s continuous growth. According to him, the improving capacity of the AMR facility positions the University for enhanced international collaborations, increased research funding, and wider training opportunities for emerging scientists.

Providing an update on the laboratory’s progress, Dr. Sati Ngulukun, a Director at the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom, stated that the AMR Laboratory has recorded rapid expansion—from a capacity of 0.5 percent to nearly 90 percent within five months. He explained that the facility is now on the verge of meeting full international standards and advancing toward accreditation. He also highlighted the centrality of antimicrobials in both medicine and agriculture, noting that misuse and overuse have driven the rise of antimicrobial resistance, where disease-causing bacteria no longer respond to treatment.

Professor Yachilla Bukar Kolo, Director of the AMR Laboratory, reinforced that the upgraded facility will play a critical role in monitoring and controlling animal and zoonotic diseases, thereby strengthening the nation’s broader public health and veterinary surveillance systems.
