University Student Dies in Tricycle Accident Near Lafia Campus
A tragic road accident near the Federal University of Lafia has claimed the life of Ifeoma Blessings Nweke, a young student known by her peers for her bright personality and dedication to her studies.
The incident occurred on the morning of August 13, at approximately 11:30 a.m., along the university access road near the entrance gate.
According to eyewitness reports, Ifeoma and a group of friends were attempting to cross the road near the speed bumps close to the university entrance when a commercial tricycle, commonly referred to as a “Keke,” approached at high speed.
The tricycle, driven by Fedelis Zakka, a resident of Agyarangu Tasha in Obi Local Government Area, was transporting female passengers from the Kayarda area toward the campus when the accident happened.
Despite efforts to alert the driver, the tricycle struck Ifeoma with considerable force, causing her to collapse on the roadside. She was quickly rushed to the university’s medical clinic for immediate treatment. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later referred to the National Hospital in Abuja, where she sadly passed away.
The news of her death has sent shockwaves through the university community, with fellow students, lecturers, and administrators expressing grief and calling for improved safety measures along the busy road leading to the campus.
The Lafia Division “A” police station has confirmed that the tricycle involved has been impounded, and the rider, Fedelis Zakka, taken into custody for questioning.
Authorities say a full-scale investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether speeding or mechanical failure played a role. This tragedy has reignited long-standing concerns about student safety, particularly the need for more effective traffic control, pedestrian crossings, and public awareness around the campus area.
Many are calling on the Nasarawa State government and university administration to take immediate steps to prevent such avoidable incidents in the future. Ifeoma’s family, friends, and classmates are left mourning a life cut short—one that held promise, potential, and hope.
