UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor Joins Dignitaries to Honour Late UNN VC Charles Igwe

The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, has joined dignitaries, academics, and sympathisers to pay tribute to the late former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Charles Arinzechukwu Igwe.

The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, has joined dignitaries, academics, and sympathisers to pay tribute to the late former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Charles Arinzechukwu Igwe.

The memorial service, held at the Cathedral Church of St. Faith in Awka, honoured the life and legacy of the late professor, who served as the 15th substantive Vice-Chancellor of UNN from 2019 to 2024. Prof. Igwe passed away on December 27, 2025, following a heart attack.

Representing the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, described the late academic as an erudite scholar whose life exemplified diligence, integrity, and service. He noted that the large turnout at the event reflected the enduring impact of a life dedicated to meaningful contributions, urging young people to embrace discipline and shun the pursuit of quick wealth at the expense of values.

In his sermon, the officiating Bishop, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, described the late professor as humble, accessible, and devoted to his faith. He urged public office holders to remain accountable and committed to service, emphasising the importance of integrity in leadership.

In a condolence message, Prof. Anyaehie described the late Igwe as a rare gem, noting his commitment to mentorship and his peaceful disposition. He said the loss was deeply felt by UNN, Anambra State, and the Nigerian academic community, adding that his contributions would remain a lasting reference point.

The event drew prominent figures, including the widow, Lady Ngozi Igwe; the current Vice-Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Uchenna Atuanya; former UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone; and former Vice-Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Prof. Chukwuma Ozumba, among others.

Prof. Igwe, a distinguished Professor of Soil Science, was widely recognised for his contributions to tropical soil stability research. His legacy as a scholar, administrator, and mentor continues to resonate across Nigeria’s academic landscape.
