The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) is set to hold its 52nd convocation ceremony this Friday, with an impressive 252 students earning first-class degrees in a variety of disciplines. This marks a significant achievement for the institution, reinforcing its reputation as a leading academic center in Nigeria.

In a press briefing held on Tuesday, 7th May 2024, the Vice-Chancellor of UNN, Professor Charles Igwe, revealed that a total of 12,526 students will be awarded bachelor’s degrees at the ceremony, representing a notable increase of 1,082 students compared to last year’s 51st convocation.

Breakdown of Degrees

Among the 12,526 graduates, the breakdown is as follows:

- 4,834 will be conferred with second-class upper degrees,

- 5,883 will receive second-class lower degrees,

- 747 will earn third-class degrees, 

- 25 will receive a pass, and

- 746 will receive unclassified degrees,

Unclassified degrees are typically awarded to graduates in courses such as medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine, which do not follow the conventional classification system. The total number of post-graduate degrees and diplomas awarded is also noteworthy, with 412 earning doctorates, 961 receiving master's degrees, and 75 being awarded postgraduate diplomas.

Distinguished Speakers and Honorary Degrees

The convocation will feature a lecture delivered by Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, with the theme "Why Nigerian Universities Should Lead the Way to a New Country." The lecture will be chaired by a former military governor of old Imo State and former Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ike Nwachukwu, a retired army general.

The university will also honor four distinguished individuals with honorary doctorate degrees, including:

- Emeka Offor, the chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, who will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Business Administration,

- El Anatsui, a renowned professor from Ghana, who will be conferred with an honorary Doctor of Letters,
