Professor Edwin Omeje, a prominent scholar and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), has highlighted the natural cures for human and animal diseases, emphasizing that nature acts as a vast biosynthetic laboratory providing a wide range of solutions. This message was delivered during the 203rd Inaugural Lecture of UNN, where Omeje, a senior lecturer in Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, discussed the remarkable potential of natural products.

In his lecture titled “Nature as the Unmatchable and Incontrovertible Chemist: Evidence from Research in Natural Product Chemistry,” Professor Omeje explained that nature holds an unlimited repository of resources for humanity's needs. He pointed out that every healing mechanism required by humans is available within the complex biosynthetic processes of the natural environment, as long as there is a stable environmental equilibrium.

Omeje stressed that traditional practices in Africa utilized natural remedies for healing and health maintenance, leading to longer lifespans. He attributed the longevity of previous generations to their reliance on natural foods, fruits, and plants, which contain essential natural chemicals. In contrast, modern society's increased reliance on synthetic foods and chemicals has led to health issues and decreased life expectancy.

Despite the challenges faced by emerging natural product chemists in Africa, Omeje encouraged further research into natural products to identify which plants or combinations can cure specific diseases or ailments. He noted that while Nigeria and Africa have a rich repository of herbal medicines, some traditional practices are shrouded in secrecy, with a tendency to associate natural healing with spiritism or occultism.

Omeje’s lecture called for a more transparent approach to traditional healing practices. He warned against the misconceptions tied to sacrifices and rituals in the use of natural herbs for treatment. Instead, he advocated for a scientific approach to harnessing the healing power of nature.

During the lecture, Omeje thanked the Vice-Chancellor of UNN, Professor Charles Igwe, for his support and leadership, acknowledging the opportunity to serve as the Dean of Student Affairs. Igwe described Omeje as a cornerstone of his administration, praising his dedication and commitment to his role. The event was well-attended, with attendees from the university community and beyond.

Professor Omeje's insights into natural healing highlight the importance of embracing nature's resources while promoting a scientific approach to traditional medicine. His message resonates with a broader call to return to natural, sustainable practices for improved health and well-being.
