In a significant stride towards sustainable energy solutions, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), received commendations from Chief Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovations, for the successful installation of Solar Energy Power Plants and an Electric Vehicle Charging Station. This commendation was extended during the inauguration ceremony led by Mr. Till Mansann, a Member of German Parliament and Hydrogen Commissioner.

The initiative, sponsored by the German Government through the YESPV-NIGBEN project, aims to revolutionize energy generation and enhance food security in Nigeria. The project focuses on deploying climate-friendly methods for energy generation while simultaneously exploring food production and preservation techniques.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Chief Uche Nnaji applauded the collaborative efforts between the German Government, YESPV Nigeria team, and the Center for Energy Research Commission (CERC) at UNN. He emphasized the pivotal role these energy power plants would play in addressing the energy crisis within UNN and the broader national landscape. Additionally, he highlighted the potential of such initiatives to bolster food security while providing clean energy alternatives.

Prof. Charles Igwe, the Vice-Chancellor of UNN, echoed similar sentiments, expressing gratitude to the German Government for choosing UNN as the host institution for these groundbreaking projects. Prof. Igwe emphasized the collaborative nature of the endeavor, involving CERC-UNN and the Center for Energy and Climate Research in Julich, Germany.

The projects include a 20kWp Agri-PV system at the institution’s energy center, a 20kWp system at the University Medical Center, among others, designed to serve both research and practical purposes. Prof. Igwe underscored the significance of these projects in alleviating energy challenges within the university while providing a platform for innovative research and development.

In his remarks, Prof. Paully Ugwuoke, the YESPV Nigeria team leader, expressed satisfaction with the successful completion of the projects, affirming their alignment with the stipulated objectives. He emphasized the need for continued support and investment from the German Government to further enhance energy solutions in Nigeria.
