UNN SUG President Suspended Over Alleged Assault, Financial Misconduct

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus has suspended its President, Okolo Bethel Chinwugo, following a decisive vote by the legislative arm of the union.

The decision was reached during a General Plenary session held on March 29, 2026, where the motion for suspension secured 31 out of 35 votes, exceeding the constitutionally required two-thirds majority. The action followed a formal petition submitted on March 19 and endorsed by 26 members of the House.

Chinwugo is facing multiple allegations, including assault, abuse of office, and financial misconduct. Reports presented to the House allege that he was involved in the physical assault of a student at the Mbonu Ojike Hostel and issued threats of expulsion while acting in his official capacity.

Following the suspension, the Vice President, Ezeh Otuomasirichukwu Promise, has assumed office as Acting President pending the outcome of investigations.

As part of the resolution, the suspended president has been directed to hand over all union property within 48 hours. The SUG has also constituted a seven-member independent panel to investigate the allegations, with a mandate to submit its findings within 21 days.

Chinwugo has been barred from parading himself as SUG President throughout the duration of the suspension, as the union moves to address the allegations and restore institutional credibility.
