UNN SUG Raises Alarm Over Proposed 100 Percent School Fees Increment for 2025/2026 Session

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has alerted the student body to a proposed increase in school fees for the 2025/2026 academic session by the University Management.

The disclosure followed an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, 24 December 2025, between the University Management and the leadership of the Students’ Union. The meeting was convened to deliberate on critical issues affecting students’ welfare and the overall funding challenges facing the institution.

In a statement jointly signed by the SUG President, Comrade Ozoagu Chinedu G., and the Secretary-General, Comrade Utazi Simon O., the Union revealed that Management proposed a 100 percent increment in school fees as part of measures aimed at repositioning the University and addressing persistent financial constraints.

According to the SUG, the University Management explained that inadequate funding has significantly affected operations, infrastructure, and service delivery, prompting the proposed adjustment in fees to sustain academic and administrative activities.

Reacting to the proposal, the Students’ Union Government stated that it has carefully evaluated the situation from the perspective of students and immediately commenced engagements with Management through constructive dialogue. The Union emphasized its commitment to ensuring that any decision taken reflects fairness, affordability, and sensitivity to the prevailing economic conditions in the country.

The SUG disclosed that extensive consultations were held within the last 72 hours with students and student leaders across faculties at both the Nsukka campus (UNN) and the Enugu campus (UNEC). Following these consultations, a common position was reached, with the Union stating that it could only consider a maximum of 25 percent increment in school fees, if such an increase becomes unavoidable.

The Union further revealed that students overwhelmingly rejected any proposed increment in hostel fees, citing poor living conditions in most hostels. According to the SUG, increasing hostel charges without visible and substantial improvements in facilities, maintenance, and welfare services is unacceptable to the student body.

“In light of these developments, we call on the University Management to consider a 25 percent increment in school fees and to suspend any increase in hostel fees until living conditions are significantly improved,” the statement stated.

The Students’ Union Government reaffirmed its resolve to protect the interests of students while remaining open to dialogue that supports the long-term growth and sustainability of the University. Students were urged to remain calm, orderly, and patient as discussions with Management continue.

The Union also referenced a Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) meeting held on 27 December 2025, which involved student leaders from the Nsukka campus and key stakeholders of the University.

The statement was endorsed by principal officers of the UNN Students’ Union Government, including the President, Vice President, Secretary-General, and members of the Executive Council, and concluded with the Union’s slogan: “Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta!”
