Usmanu Danfodiyo University Students Involved in Road Crash One Dead, Several Injured

Tragedy struck on Saturday, July 20, as a vehicle transporting students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), from Ilorin, Kwara State, to Sokoto was involved in a horrific accident along the Koko axis of Kebbi State, leaving one person dead and at least ten others seriously injured.

According to reports gathered by Legit.ng, the students had departed from Omoda Roundabout in Ilorin — a common transport hub for students heading to the university — before their vehicle crashed. The driver of the bus was confirmed dead on the scene, while most passengers sustained injuries. Only three students reportedly escaped unhurt.

A student union leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the victims were initially rushed to Koko General Hospital in Kebbi State, with ongoing efforts to transfer them to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) for more comprehensive care.

In response, the Ilorin Emirates Students’ Union publicly appealed for financial assistance to support the victims’ treatment and transportation logistics. The union called on well-meaning Nigerians to help shoulder the mounting medical expenses.

Reacting to the devastating event, Gobir Habeeb, a lawyer and UDUS alumnus, expressed heartbreak over the incident and emphasized the need for collective support.

“As a graduate of UDUS, I know how dangerous these long-distance trips can be — bad roads, exhaustion, packed buses. Sadly, this time, the worst has happened,” Habeeb said in a statement. “The students need more than our prayers — they need real help: medical care, recovery support, and compassion.”

The tragic accident has cast a shadow over both the UDUS and Ilorin Emirate communities, with students, alumni, and parents mourning the loss and praying for the recovery of the injured.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported increasing calls by residents and travelers for urgent rehabilitation of critical highways, particularly the Ilorin-Jebba Expressway, where another fatal crash occurred recently.
