We exist to benefit communities —FULafia VC

The Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies (CARDS), Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), in collaboration with the GIZ, a Germany sponsored organisation, conducted a Training of Trainers (TOT) with theme: “Farmer’s Financial Cycle and Micro-AgriEnterprise Training (MAT). 

The event took place at the Muhammadu Buhari TETFUND Centre of Excellence (Laboratory Hall).

The Vice-Chancellor of FULafia, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, declared open the training, saying that universities “exist to benefit their immediate communities.”

According to Abdul Rahman, impacts of universities “must be felt around the areas they exist in order to demonstrate their effectiveness and relevance.”

He said that universities must add value to their immediate communities “some of whose resources were taken to establish the institutions.”

The vice-chancellor called on the GIZ to do more in the area of collaboration with FULafia, urging the German body to engage with other centres in the University to organise more activities.

Abdul Rahman, while thanking the GIZ for the already strong support it was giving the University, pointed out that collaboration between the University and GIZ was in the interest of both parties.

Abdul Rahman called on other centres to emulate CARDS in partnering with bodies from other places, saying that without cooperation universities cannot live up to their obligations.

He praised the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Partnerships, Professor Samaila Dakyes, for pushing the centres to effectively discharge their mandates, saying that “we are seeing the results of the work of Dakyes.”

He urged the trainees to be serious and learn a lot from the trainers.

Earlier, the GIZ consultant for the programme, Mr Ojeifo Kingsley, thanked the vice-chancellor for his support for the success of the training.

He said that his organisation would explore other ways to improve its collaboration with the University.

Those who attended the even included the Director, CARDS, Professor F.A. Ajayi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Adminitration, Professor Ali Shugaba, Dakyes, some deans of faculties and directors of centres
