Wind Destroys School Roof in Ekiti, Forces Pupils and Teachers to Scoop Water from Classrooms

A devastating windstorm has blown off the roof of Wesley United Primary School in Iworo, Omuo-Ekiti, located in the Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti State. The damage has left classrooms flooded and learning activities completely disrupted. 

A viral video making rounds on social media shows teachers and pupils wading through stagnant, greenish water inside their classrooms. The scene captured children using buckets to scoop water while teachers desperately tried to clear the flooding to make the space somewhat usable. Since the incident, academic activities have come to a halt. Teachers report that instead of teaching, they now spend their days clearing water to keep the classrooms minimally functional. 

Staff at the school said they spent the entire Monday morning trying to remove floodwater. The roofless structure remains dangerously unstable, with teachers fearing it could fully collapse during the next storm, putting lives at risk. 

Local residents have described the situation as a disaster waiting to happen. Without a roof, children are now exposed to rain, and the waterlogged classrooms have become breeding grounds for disease. The once-manageable learning environment has become hazardous. 

Parents are growing increasingly worried about sending their children to school. While many want to pull them out for safety reasons, they say there’s simply nowhere else for them to go. The situation has been described as the result of years of government neglect. 

Residents claim the school has been in poor condition for a long time. During election seasons, politicians reportedly visit the school, take photos, and make promises to repair the buildings — but those promises are never fulfilled. Now that the roof is entirely gone, the community says the suffering of the pupils has reached an unbearable level. 

Teachers, parents, and community members are appealing to Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji to urgently intervene and rehabilitate the school. 

They are also reaching out to the Ministry of Education, non-governmental organizations, and philanthropic individuals for help — emphasizing that the safety of the children is at serious risk. 

Locals warn that if nothing is done, the structure could collapse entirely during another storm. They hope that by speaking out now, disaster can be prevented.
