Young Woman Wins Gates Scholarship, Heads to University of Cambridge for Master's Degree

A talented young woman, Mikaela Gerwin, has been awarded the prestigious Gates Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

Mikaela, a senior at Princeton University from New York City, will study for a Master of Philosophy in History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine. She is among 77 students globally who received the scholarship, which supports outstanding students from outside the UK in their postgraduate studies at Cambridge.

Currently studying for a bachelor’s degree in History with a certificate in global health and health policy, Mikaela aims to research pre-modern medicine, illness, and science through social and religious historical perspectives. At Princeton, she is actively involved as a student fellow for the project on Gender in the Global Community and a global health scholar at the Center for Health and Wellbeing.

Mikaela's impressive academic and extracurricular record includes working with the Family Violence Prevention and Services at the US Department of Health and Human Services, the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, and Boston Medical Center. She has received several accolades, including the Shelby Cullom Davis Center junior independent work research grant and the Program in Judaic Studies undergraduate funding award. In 2014, New York Jewish Week named her one of its “36 under 36” young Jewish leaders.

Expressing her future aspirations, Mikaela emphasized her commitment to public service to address domestic violence as a social determinant of health. "I will be a better public health policymaker with the weight of a long historical context holding myself and others accountable," she said.
