2025 Green Awards: UNILAG Honors Sustainability Champions and Inducts New Green Hub Members
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability and circular economy practices by hosting the 2025 End-of-Year Green Award & Sustainability Induction Ceremony on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability and circular economy practices by hosting the 2025 End-of-Year Green Award & Sustainability Induction Ceremony on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
Organized by the UNILAG Green Hub, the event recognized individuals, departments, and partners for their outstanding contributions to recycling, climate resilience, and environmental stewardship across the campus community.

Vice-Chancellor Receives Green Leadership Award
The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the 2025 Green Leadership Award to UNILAG’s 13th Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola, OON, FAS, in recognition of her visionary leadership in driving environmental transformation on campus.
Key initiatives under her leadership include:
- 1000 Trees Campus Greening Project – enhancing biodiversity and climate resilience.
- Green Future Programme – establishing a youth-led sustainability and social enterprise model.
- Introduction of electric campus shuttle buses – promoting clean mobility and reducing carbon emissions.
Staff and Pioneers Commended
Other notable awards went to:
- Prof. Lucian Obinna Chukwu, immediate past Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), who received the 2025 Green Icon Award for facilitating the MOU that established the Green Hub.
- Prof. Bola Oboh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics & Research), awarded Most Outstanding Green Management Staff for personally recycling over 1,500 plastic bottles this year.
Departments and Units Excel in Sustainability Efforts

Several departments and units were recognized for exemplary contributions:
- Communication Unit, led by Mrs. Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, for embedding the “Trash It – Reuse It” message and spearheading the Green Revolution campaign.
- Security Unit, under Mr. Omotosho, for intercepting illegal scavengers and recovering over 1,000 kg of recyclable waste.
- School of Foundation Studies, led by Prof. Khalid Adekoya, for contributing over 120 kg of paper to recycling, the highest departmental total for the year.
Additionally, the Examinations Office, Records Office, and Security Unit were named the Most Outstanding Green Departments.
Students and Alumni Recognized
Exceptional students who are alumni of the Green Hub were also honored:
- Ms. Moyo Azeez (Mass Communication, First-Class) – whose final year research focused on Green Hub activities.
- Mr. Nurudeen Ogundipe (Psychology) – recipient of the Lagos Youth Circularity Award for promoting Green Hub initiatives.
Industry and Alumni Partnership
Lafarge Africa Plc, a key sustainability partner, delivered a goodwill message through Mr. Adedokun Daniel, highlighting UNILAG as a national leader in campus-based environmental innovation. He encouraged the university community to fully leverage its potential for sustainability leadership.

The ceremony concluded with the formal induction of new Green Hub members, who successfully completed sustainability training courses, strengthening the Hub’s mission to cultivate the next generation of circular economy champions in Nigeria and beyond.
