84-year-old Betty Sandison Achieves Lifelong Dream, Graduates with Bachelor's Degree

Betty Sandison, an extraordinary 84-year-old woman, has realized her lifelong dream by earning a Bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in the United States. Hailing from Renville, Betty achieved this remarkable feat by obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies from the University's College of Continuing and Professional Studies.
Reflecting on her journey, Betty shared that she originally left her hometown in 1955 to pursue higher education, becoming the first person in her family to do so. Although she initially embarked on a path to become a nurse and obtained her nursing license after a year of college, she had to leave her studies unfinished upon getting married.

In 2013, after retiring from her nursing career, Betty seized the opportunity to fulfill her long-held aspiration. Inspired during a lunch conversation with friends discussing their lifelong dreams, she made the bold decision to return to the University of Minnesota and complete her degree.

Enrolling in classes at the university in 2018, Betty navigated through the challenges of a changed campus environment and adapted to new technologies, including computer usage. Despite facing additional obstacles due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitated a shift to online learning, Betty persevered and eventually transitioned back to physical classes to continue her studies.
In sharing her experience, Betty emphasized the importance of pursuing one's goals and not allowing any obstacles to hinder one's aspirations. Looking ahead, Betty remains optimistic and is already contemplating her next endeavor, demonstrating her unwavering determination and resilience.
