UNN holds the distinction of being the first full-fledged indigenous and autonomous university in Nigeria. Inspired by the American educational system, it was established with the goal of providing world-class education on Nigerian soil. This institution, often referred to as a 'land-grant university,' is a point of pride for the nation. With 17 faculties and 102 academic departments, the University of Nigeria offers a wide range of educational opportunities. It provides 108 undergraduate programs and 211 postgraduate programs, allowing students to pursue their passions and interests in various fields of study. In 2010, UNN celebrated its 50th anniversary, a testament to its enduring commitment to education and excellence. The year 2020 would have marked its 60th anniversary, were it not for the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, this remarkable institution continues to thrive, embracing new generations of students with open arms. The establishment of UNN traces its roots back to May 18, 1955, when a law was passed to create a university in the Eastern Region of Nigeria. The driving force behind this initiative was Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, who was the then Premier of the Eastern Region. The commitment to education and the belief in the power of knowledge were central to the university's formation.

In its early days, UNN sought international expertise and guidance in planning and developing the university. The Inter-University Council for Higher Education and Overseas, along with the International Co-operation Administration (now the United States Agency for International Development), played a significant role in assisting with the university's establishment. The efforts of these international collaborators culminated in a white paper issued by the Eastern Nigeria Government in November 1958. This paper underscored the importance of the University of Nigeria as a means to address the problems and needs of Nigeria and as a valuable endeavor deserving of support. In April 1959, a provisional council was appointed with the authority to build a sound university. This council was composed of both Nigerian and international experts, reflecting the spirit of international cooperation and collaboration. The vision was to create an institution that would not only provide quality education but also address the unique challenges and needs of Nigeria.
