The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Board of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, Mba Ukariwe, acknowledged the financial challenges faced by the university, citing that the 11 months salary arrears owed to staff are beyond its current financial capacity.

In a recent statement, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Board of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, Mba Ukariwe, acknowledged the financial challenges faced by the university, citing that the 11 months salary arrears owed to staff are beyond its current financial capacity.

The statement was issued to the Joint Consultative Committee of Staff Unions of the university, urging them to consider calling off their strike, which was initiated in protest of the non-payment of the outstanding salary arrears.

Ukariwe pleaded for the intervention of the state government to address the financial crisis and expressed empathy towards the university staff who have been enduring hardships due to the delayed salaries.

He took the opportunity to appreciate the efforts of the Governor and Visitor to the university, Alex Otti, for the consistent release of monthly subvention and the restoration of security measures in the university since assuming office.

Commending Dr. Otti for the substantial budgetary allocation for education in 2024, Ukariwe expressed hope for a brighter future for the education sector.

The ongoing strike has disrupted academic activities, prompting concerns among students and stakeholders. The university community awaits further developments as they hope for a resolution to the salary arrears issue.
