AE-FUNAI SUG Partners with SIDI NGO for Hepatitis B Screening and Vaccination

Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI) in Ebonyi State has collaborated with SIDI, a non-governmental organization, to conduct a Hepatitis B screening and vaccination campaign for its students.

The initiative, organized by the Directorate of Health, Students’ Union Government (SUG), featured a technical team led by Mr. Michael Iwara from SIDI and supported by medical student volunteers, the SUG Director of Health, Aiwerioghene Efosa, and former SUG Director of Health, Okedi Williams.

Mr. Iwara emphasized the seriousness of Hepatitis B, a liver infection preventable by vaccination and commonly spread through exposure to infected bodily fluids. He advised students on preventive measures including hand hygiene, safe sexual practices, and avoiding direct contact with blood.

He also acknowledged Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sunday Elom for his support in facilitating the program and ensuring student health care. A booster dose for those vaccinated is scheduled for September 27, 2024, with follow-up plans for both reactive and non-reactive individuals.

Students at the event expressed their appreciation for the university’s commitment to their health and recognized the Hepatitis B screening program as an important step toward maintaining a healthy campus community.
